Benefit Concert: Celebrating the Life of Daniel Pearl

The world has come to know Daniel Pearl as the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in early 2002, just four months after 9/11. Since then, he has been remembered as a symbol of hope: a man who built bridges between diverse cultures -- as a writer and a gifted musician.

In celebration of Daniel’s life, The Center for Creative Resources will present a benefit concert on Sunday, October 26, 2008, at The Times Center, with all proceeds benefiting the Daniel Pearl Foundation, whose mission is to promote cross-cultural understanding through journalism, music, and innovative communications. Daniel’s former boss and colleague, Larry Ingrassia (business/finance editor at The New York Times) will chair the event.

                                            Dave Heath                                                      Mark O'Connor

The concert will feature the works of two extraordinary musician/composers who have close ties to the Pearl family. London-based composer, pianist, and jazz flautist Dave Heath composed the remarkable “Elegy for Daniel Pearl” which became the musical soundtrack for the HBO documentary The Journalist and the Jihadi. Dave will perform several of his own works and the program will include the world premiere of Heath's “Song of Spheres” featuring soprano Constance Hauman. Liam Hendrix Heath, Dave’s son and a gifted jazz trumpet player, will also perform.

The second half of the evening will highlight the artistry of violinist and fiddler Mark O’Connor. One of Daniel Pearl’s favorite artists and musical inspirations, Mark was asked by the Pearl family to perform at Daniel’s memorial service. Some young violinists and fiddlers from the Mark O’Connor String Camp will join Mr. O’Connor on stage to perform. Each year, an outstanding young violinist at the Camp is awarded the Daniel Pearl Violin to use for one year. This instrument was built by violin maker Jonathan Cooper and given to the Pearl Foundation in 2003 to commemorate Daniel’s passion for music.

The evening will begin with a 6:00pm reception in The Gallery at The Times Center, followed by the concert at 7:00pm. Guests will have an opportunity to meet the artists during the reception. $50 tickets for the evening (reception and concert) are available by calling CCR at 212-864-7827. For $30 tickets to the concert only, visit www.ccr-arts.org.
