Working in the Arts: The New York Experience 2009

Working in the Arts: The New York Experience is a three-week intensive program for select university students designed to offer valuable experience for those who have an interest in working in the arts. The program includes mini-internships at leading arts organizations in Manhattan; educational sessions with guest speakers from within the industry; and the opportunity to attend performances and exhibitions.

The program again accepted twelve outstanding students from DePauw University. The students worked 30 to 35 hours per week in unpaid internship positions from January 6-23, 2009. The students’ interests and abilities were matched with their host organizations’ needs. During the three weeks, students interned with: The Public Theater, The Sculpture Center, Festival Network, The Metropolitan Opera, Aquila Theater, Broadway Across America, New York Women in Film & Television, GenArt, ARTNews, Lois Greenfield Photography, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and The Araca Group.

During their stay in New York, the students attended The Public Theater’s Under the RadarFestival, the Broadway production of In the Heights and Equus, and a performance by the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, in addition to taking a dance class through Ailey Extension (pictured below, left).
Students also regularly attended speaker sessions with arts professionals such as Broadway producer Hank Unger, NYSCA President Heather Hitchens, and Jazz musician Dana Leong (pictured below, right).
